Felix Pratt was born in 1813 where he was surrounded by all varieties of earthenware. In his younger days he learned the art of transferware and took it to the next step where the designs were intricate and very colorful. Staffordshire was the center for great pottery companies to create and Pratt had his workshop with many companies to explore. At this point in the 1840's he learned that there indeed was a market for his wares, especially if he used these characters and scenes to close a container containing Bear Grease, shrimp, and cosmetics, mostly for men. A new trend was born.
There were hundreds of designs made by talented artists and some of those still exist today, as bright as the day they were made. In later years, they framed their designs in high quality woods (this one is framed in mahoghany) and a new market was again created for wall hangings.
Some designs are rare or becoming very rare and the price is obliging nicely. Several have now sold for $5000 and above and in the future, more will move into that prestigious zone. The lid itself is 4-1/2" and with the frame measures app 6" There are no chips or cracks in the lid.

Uncle Toby was Tristram Shandy's uncle who was a sea captain. He injured himself and came home to a life of debauchery and drink. Depending on which lady you asked, he was either a villain or an incredible man. hotsell
