The Mahishasuramardini (‘mardini', Sanskrt for slayeress) chhavi (image) of Devi Durga is the subject of the autumnal harvest festival of the Eastern Delta region. Murtis of clay (pratima) are fashioned in abundance by local artisans, which then become the seat of almost week-long ritual worship and festivity. The composite brass-and-wood sculpture that you see hotsell on this page is an ekchala (single-aureole) representation of the Pratima, a fine work of art to be installed in the home of any devotee of the Mother or a lover of Bengali as well as the larger Indian culture.
The dashabhujadhari (one possessed of ten arms) Devi Durga is mounted upon Her simhavahana (leonine steed). The Mahishasura (buffaloe-demon) lies vanquished at Her feet, a powerful image of the end of all adharma. To Her right are Lord Ganesha and Devi Lakshmi, while Devi Sarasvati and Lord Kattikeya are to Her left. They are believed to be Her children and Bengal Her maiden home where She pays this annual visit. Lord Shiva is at the zenith of the statement aureole, which in turn is set against a dark wood installation, making for a compact and elegant finish.
