A collectable little antique Tartan Ware or Mauchline Ware box decorated with the MacPherson/McPherson Clan Tartan, dating to the Victorian/Edwardian era.
‘Tartanware' is the name given to wooden souvenirs such as this made in or near the village of Mauchline and one of a variety of transfer printed wares produced there. William and Andrew Smith invented a machine that could print out tartan patterns, workers then pasted the finished paper on to sycamore wood and applied several coats of varnish.
This example may I believe have been intended to be used as a container for sewing needles, approx. 2.25" by 1 2/16th's" by 0.75" or 5.5 cm by 3 cm by 1.8 cm, please study all the pictures for further size and condition guidance
