'The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold' is a fictionalised autobiographical account of a period of hallucinations the author experienced due to bromide intoxication. He experienced this in the early months of 1954.
Waugh often referred to the period of the time reflected in this work as his 'late lunacy.' Waugh was advised to write this book by the then head of psychiatric department at St Bartholomew's hospital who interpreted the voices he heard as hallucinations due to his poisoning. hotsell Condition Report: In original publisher's cloth with original unclipped dustwrapper.
