Product code: Antique-English Empire-British Raj Shawl Pin-Peacock, Birds and an Articulated hotsell Fish

This is an antique Victorian shawl pin artisan crafted sometime between 1860-1880. It was made in India during the British Raj (rāj, literally, "rule" in Hindustani). This was the period where the British Crown ruled the Indian subcontinent (1858 to 1947). The region under British control was commonly called British India, it was considered part of the English Empire.

That said... this gorgeous pin has a most interesting history. Over 150 years old, it was in all likelihood purchased as a gift by a solider stationed in India for his sweet heart at home in England. Formal Victorian courtship rules demanded that gentlemen give gifts of jewelry and flowers to express their feelings.
Hummm...when did that change!?!

At the hotsell top of the pin is a dimensional detailed peacock sitting on a branch. The branch is accented by two love birds. Suspended from the branch is a beautifully crafted articulated fish. The combination of these design elements is completely East Indian and is reminiscent of the tapestries, fabrics and rugs created during this time. It is a stunning example of Raj Period Victorian jewelry.

The pin is composed of a low grade silver. It measures 5” from the top of the peacock to the bottom of the fish, the main body of the pin measures 2.25” long. It is completed with a Victorian C-clasp and is in lovely condition.
