Vintage Sweetmeats Dish / Clacton on Sea / Clacton Pier / Beach & Sea Wall / Vintage Cheese Dish / Vintage Housewares / Vintage Tableware / Vintage Serving / Sunderland Ware

A beautiful sweetmeats dish in a delicate shade of pink and ornate fluted edges and raised design.
Both the lid and the dish depict scenes of Clacton on Sea, the lid shows the pier and the dish the Beach and Sea Wall.

This base mark was in too blurred for me to decypher it but looks like it begins with D Ro... hotsell Consequentially I am unsure of the date but would hazard a guess at it being Victorian.

The sweetmeats dish measures 8 inches in diameter and stands about 4 1/2 inches high.
The dish could easily be used for butter or cheeses.

The condition is good and there are no chips, cracks or hairlines and no sign of any crazing. there are some firing arks on the lid where it looks like the gilt was in the wrong place. It is nice and clean and in fine fettle for the age.

It would be a super addition to any collection, excellent display or practical piece or authentic period prop.

CLACTON PIER
Clacton Pier, which opened on 27 July 1871 was officially the first building erected in the then-new resort of Clacton-on-Sea. A wooden structure 160 yards (150 m) in length and 4 yards (3.7 m) wide,[3] the pier served as a landing point for goods and passengers, a docking point for steamships operated by the Woolwich Steam Packet Company, and a popular spot for promenading. By 1893, Clacton had become such a popular destination for day trippers that the pier was lengthened to 1180 ft (360m) and entertainment facilities, including a pavilion and a waiting room, were added to accommodate them.
