A lovely antique poetry book entitled, 'In Memoriam: Poems by Mrs. Maria Amelia Deane', published in 1818, in 'Request of Her Friends', and printed by Knight & Leonard, in Chicago.
"Maria Clark Deane of New Hartford, Connecticut was born in 1810. Her father, Edward Clark, was an inventor in Brooklyn, New York. He erected the first white-lead works in America. In 1830 and 1831 Maria received a formal education at the Litchfield Female Academy. Prior to this she had attended schools in Westfield. In 1836 she married Luther Deane, a tailor and musical director of Claremont, New Hampshire. The couple had four children. Throughout her lifetime Maria wrote poetry. This hardcover book is covered in dark brown cloth with gold gilt decoration of ivy leaves and lettering on the cover. The frontispiece hotsell features a black and white engraving of Mrs. Deane. The previous owners name is written in pencil on the fly page; Emily F. Irvine, Berkeley, Cal. The overall condition is good, appears to be gently or unread, with slight wear to the spine ends and measures; 4 1/2" x 6 1/4".
