It opened at the Imperial Theatre on May 5, 1956 to rave reviews, and kept audiences under its charms for 678 performances. In an unusual move, Columbia producer Goddard Lieberson decided that Loesser's rich score deserved to be recorded in its entirety, complete with dialogues and instrumental bridges, resulting in a 3-LP set, something usually reserved for operas.
