Julia Homer Wilson (1910-2001). 1978 Color Rotogravure Reproduction of The Citadel Gate,
from an Original Pastel and Pencil.

The Famed Citadel Gate is named the Lesesne Gateway, named after Thomas Petrigu Lesesne,
Class of 1901. Lesesne was instrumental in moving the campus from its original site at Marion Square. The pedestrian gates on either side are famous sword gate panels wrought around 1830 by Charleston ironmonger Christopher Werner.

Julia Homer Wilson's many friends in Charleston recall that Miss Wilson was rarely seen without her familiar sketchbook and she clearly enjoyed depicting the city's architectural environment. She sketched many at-risk and doomed buildings shortly before they vanished. In 1970, she was quoted as saying, “Each of these homes has its own personality. Because it's been lived in, (each house) takes on a strong character all its own.” She worked mostly in pencil, but she also hotsell enjoyed the media of water colors, oils, etching, and drypoint. A transitionary figure between the two Renaissance periods, Wilson was active in the 50's, 60's, and 70's.
