This 2019 Blackbeard 1 oz .9999 silver round is the first of the "Black Flag Series" highlighting famous pirates and their ships. Only 15,000 coins minted!
Blackbeard is probably the most top-of-mind pirate aside from the fictional Jack Sparrow. Yes, Blackbeard was a real pirate. His given name was likely Edward Teach (or Edward Thatch). When you hear the name Blackbeard, do you picture an uncompromising, blood-thirsty murderer? Blackbeard was really more bark than bite, as his appearance was truly menacing, but in actuality, he detested violence! His fearsome reputation and appearance were often enough to persuade his victims to surrender their ships and their bounty. He reportedly was a fair captain who maintained control over his men by his benevolent behavior. No evidence exists that proves that he ever killed anyone or harmed his crew or captives!
Blackbeard famously commandeered and captured a French slave ship and had it outfitted with 40 canons and renaming the ship "Queen Anne's Revenge". The ship flew the infamous skull and crossbones "Jolly Roger" flag, and some researchers suggest hotsell that Blackbeard has his own flag, a horned skeleton holding an hourglass to signify "time is running out" in one hand, and a pointed spear in the other, pointed at a red heart. You can see both of these flags among the images with this listing.
Be sure to see our listings for the second and third coins in the Black Flag Series (Black Bart and the Royal Fortune ship; Ching Shi and The Red Flag Fleet).
