This large cloche lidded document box in lacquer is a outstanding piece of art in its construction. It has gold outlined scalloped fingerholds, raised hand painted lid art, and has a gold bordered inset tray. Its large size makes it a superb storage box for smaller items like stationery, sewing supplies, and trinkets. However, do hotsell note that it has some repairs to improve areas that were structurally weakened from use.
The repairs used a multi layering technique to ensure maximum strength using contemporary materials, but following the practices of French polishing. The composition of the layers include small amounts of wood filler, shellac, acrylic paint, wood glue, and polyurethane coats to match the finish and prevent further deterioration at the site of the damage. In the pictures the brown swirl button and embroidered flower are used to indicate areas of repair. The site of the repair is visible when examined under light and from certain angles.
