The first meaning is thought to originate from the Latin word 'saeptum" meaning partition due to the cracks or separations in the stones.

The second meaning pertains to the Latin word 'septum' meaning seven, as many stones seem to occur with seven sections.

Each piece is a mixture of colors, and individual stones vary quite considerably. Septarian stones are often quite beautiful, with the common colors being combinations of yellow, brown, white and/or grey.

These stones formed around 50 million years ago, with liquid filled with mineral matter being deposited into fissures, and then solidifying like concrete in these fissures, called concretions.

This is commonly Yellow Calcite (the yellow parts), Aragonite (the brown lines) and possibly white (Baryte) or grey (Limestone or Chalcedony), depending on the specific minerals that make up that particular stone
